Synopsis

St. John’s based jazz pianist Florian Hoefner meets Newfoundland-born jazz bassist Jim Vivian who just returned to his home province after 40 years in Toronto. German-born Hoefner, who moved to St. John’s in 2014 after 6 years in the freelance scene of New York City, draws from a myriad of influences that culminate in his unique brand of modern jazz. Praised as a “composer-bandleader of insightful resolve” by the New York Times and a “harmonically daring pianist […] reaching toward new sonic territory” by Downbeat, Florian Hoefner has made his mark as an inventive creator and performer of exciting contemporary Jazz.  His latest album “First Spring” features his arrangements of folk tunes from around the world and won “Instrumental Recording of the Year” and “Jazz Recording of the Year” at the 2020 East Coast Music Awards. Hoefner serves as Assistant Professor for Jazz Studies at Memorial University in St. John’s.

Together, Hoefner and Vivian will present a varied program with original compositions, jazz standards, and folk tune arrangements from Florian’s album “First Spring”.
